The Dark Knight Returns (alternatively titled Batman: The Dark Knight Returns but originally titled Batman: The Dark Knight) is a 1986 four-issue comic book miniseries starring Batman, written by Frank Miller, illustrated by Miller and Klaus Janson, with color by Lynn Varley, and published by DC Comics. The Joker was a psychopathic anarchist, nihilist, and criminal mastermind (self-professed « agent of chaos ») who rose to power in the criminal underworld by thrusting Gotham City into turmoil, and drew Batman ever closer to crossing the line between hero and vigilante. Batman’s greatest nemesis, the Joker, re-emerges after having been catatonic for 10 years, his catatonia breaking when he discovers that Batman has returned to Gotham. He convinces the doctors at Arkham Asylum that he is sane and deserves to be released. The Joker is one of the main antagonists of Frank Miller’s 1986 The Dark Knight Returns comic book miniseries, a posthumous antagonist on its 2002 sequel miniseries The Dark Knight Strikes Again, an unseen antagonist on the 1988 story arc Batman: Year One, and the main antagonist on the 2008… The Joker first appeared in Gotham City around the same time that the Batman arrived on the scene, and since their very first confrontation, the Clown Prince of Crime has been the Dark Knight’s most formidable nemesis. At the end of DKR #3, Joker frames Batman for his own murder, thus making it appear that Bats has violated his I-Don’t-Actually-Kill-People-Myself-But-Otherwise-Everything-Goes code. Batman: The Joker War The Joker has never wanted his battle with Batman to end—but now his motivation has shifted. The Clown Prince of Crime battles the Dark Knight Detective head-to-head, one last time, with the fate of Gotham City at stake! In either version, either in Detective Comics #168 of 1951 or Alan Moore’s Batman: The Killing Joke, the character was an ordinary man. Trying to help his family, Joker ends up confronting Batman.
