The Post has always made an effort to reach out to a wider audience over the years (see « Kid’s Post, » or WaPo’s TikTok guy, Dave Jorgenson) in an effort to inform people. In the Marty Baron-era, the paper was able to bounce back from the brink of collapse with some of the best journalism (like the Afghan Paper). There were some rumors at my agency that the WaPo would be getting rid of their free subscriptions for .gov/.mil addresses? It looks like if you try to sign up using the corporate group link and put in your .gov/.mil email address, you receive an email saying « sorry, that email isn’t part of a group subscription. » Anyone else heard about this? While it does remove the paywall, and allow you to scroll the main article, it seems that WaPo is now just putting the first paragraph of the article on the page. I assume you have to have a valid signed-in account to be re-directed to the full article URL. I have started doing the WaPo Daily Crossword, but I am really stumped about what is a good score, and what some of the insignia means. For instance, I am not from the US, so many sporting, product, educational or geographic references can go sailing over my head. WaPo’s gift link is one way the paper acknowledges the subscription and paywall model doesn’t work for everyone and makes their journalism a little more accessible. Is WaPo privately owned? I don’t think releasing a piece criticising an owner of a business would make you stay employed at said business for long, regardless of the status or money involved.
