Shaun of the Dead has got to be one of the top 10 post-2000 comedies which, for my generation, also makes it arguably one of the best comedies of all time. Not only does it set new standards in recent Brit comedies, but it also trumps many of its US ilk, avoiding the standard tactics of insulting spoof antics in favour of gentle parody, and … Having only watched Shaun of the Dead 4K, I have to say that going off memory (I’ve seen the movie countless times on the 1080p blu ray release), that the image is surprising (because it’s by Universal and is a cash in release) better by some margin mainly due to HDR/WCG, and decent level of natural grain and detail, in spite of it upscaled … Shaun of the Dead was shot using Arriflex cameras on 35mm film and finished as a 2K DI which has been used for this Ultra HD Blu-ray release. The disc presents an up-scaled 3840 x 2160p resolution image in the correct widescreen 2.35:1 aspect ratio, and uses 10-bit video depth, a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG), High Dynamic Range in the form of HDR10+ , and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec. Well, Shaun of the Dead isn’t like that, but is just as good for different reasons. At no point do you think Shaun of the Dead has been through anything as vulgar as picture processing. It looks real because of the (very) slight imperfections which perfectly fits the movie’s feel. Fair enough, some in car shots are faintly blurred and the dark in pub setting is a bit too black on black.
